As part of my HR core class at UCLA Anderson, we had a guest speaker talk to us about management in design organizations. The speaker was Bryan Walker from IDEO. The talk was fun and engaging, and he was able to show off some of the latest projects IDEO's worked on recently, which was neat.
He broke his talk down into the following categories to give us an overview of how designers at IDEO think and what their "management style" (if any) really is. Insight: Observe people at extremes

I met Bryan last year, I think the most peculiar cultural aspect of IDEO is a great respect for whatever comment or idea comes out during the discussion... In most work places, some people are afraid to speak up in groups fearing that what they have in mind may make them look stupid to the audience. Instead, at IDEO there is a desire for unusual comments, because often the best solutions from appearently irrational ideas....

It is really great news that you got an opportunity to hear the speech of Bryan Walker. Since I have attended one of his classes before, I know how interesting it is. He knows how to grab the attention of audience. Thanks for sharing.
