I heard about Alisa Cohn from the podcast she did with Tim Ferriss. I recently finished reading her book From Start-Up to Grown-Up: Grow Your Leadership to Grow Your Business, and I really liked it and learned a lot. It served as an excellent overview of many parts of leadership and management and how those evolve as a company grows. I also loved that she had an appendix full of actual scripts for the most delicate situations that are so common. Below are my main takeaways and notes on the book. I highly recommend it to any entrepreneur running a business that's growing.

I attended a parenting talk a while ago, and the speaker recommended the book UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World by Michele Borba. I recently finished reading it and thought it was decent. The book seemed to have a mnemonic/acronym for every situation, which I thought was clever but also tiring by the end. I did appreciate reading about all the different games and example activities that can help develop empathy in kids and the research behind why empathy helps kids succeed. Below are my main notes and takeaways from the book. A while back, a friend of mine recommended to me the book The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company by Bob Iger. I recently finished it and really enjoyed it. It just so happened that I visited Disneyland a couple weeks before reading this, so a lot of the elements mentioned were fresh in my mind. I really liked the leadership principles he mentioned and how he illustrated them with examples. It was also crazy to hear about his negotiations with Steve Jobs. It was also fun to read this right after reading Creativity Inc. about Pixar a few weeks ago as this presents the other side of the story. See below some of my main takeaways and lessons learned (humility, hard work, integrity, relentless pursuit of perfection, etc.). Also, I got a kick out of the idea "micromanaging is underrated." I definitely recommend this book to any entrepreneur/leader/founder. |
